HOW CAN I
I hear your voice on the telephone
Sounding tired and alone
You say you can't wait 'til I get home
The checkbook isn't balancing
They say the kids won't stop their bickering
And again it leaves me wondering, wondering
How can I love this woman now
How can I set aside myself
Even for a little while, a little while
She's been sleeping for a little while
Slips into a dream that makes her smile
About a time when she was just a child
She's awaken rather suddenly
By tiny voices down the hallway
Crying out for Mommy
And she thinks...
How can I love these children now
How can I set aside myself
Even for a little while, a little while
The desire to serve myself is ingrained in who I am
It's an iron soldier yeah,
Shouting out commands
I want comfort at no cost
I want peace on my own terms
But some lessons in life we're forced to kneel and learn
In a garden Jesus knelt to pray
On a moonless night, so afraid
Of the price He knew he had to pay
He cried, Father take this cup from me
The cross and all it's suffering
Still, not my will but yours shall be
And he cried...
How can I love these people now
How can I set myself aside for even a little while
But he found a way to love all people now
(He gave his life for you, He hung on a cross for you)
And he found a way to set aside himself
Even for a little while, a little while
